AND TRICKS

SEPTEMBER 2024 - Designed to help first-year students with their transition into university. It will include tips on academic resources available, studying methods, maps of key points on campus, and discussions about how to succeed in standard first-year STEM courses.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH NIGHT

OCTOBER 2024 - Research Night is an annual event for University of Calgary professors to present their research in the Engineering and Science fields. Research Night is an
excellent networking opportunity for students interested in completing a
summer research term. The event helps foster further student involvement in
STEM research and generates interest in research and development careers.

RESUME INSIGHTS + INTERVIEW PREPARATION

OCTOBER 2024 - PDW to help students refine their resumes and sharpen their interview skills to excel in their career journeys. This interactive session offers practical tips and personalized guidance from industry professionals and experienced mentors to craft standout resumes and approach interviews with confidence.

OCTOBER 2024 - Connect mentors and mentees as part of WISE’s mentorship program. This event is designed to foster meaningful relationships, set clear goals, and build a supportive community. Participants will engage in interactive activities, network with like-minded peers, and hear inspiring insights from experienced mentors.

Bake sale

BAKE SALE

OCTOBER 2024 - Our annual bake sale, where you can enjoy delicious treats while supporting a great cause! This year, all proceeds were donated to the Calgary Women’s Immigration Centre to help empower and support immigrant women in our community. Many of the baked goods have been generously donated by local bakeries or lovingly prepared by our wonderful executive team.

GIRL GUIDES FALL FEST

OCTOBER 2024 - WISE had the fantastic opportunity to participate in the Girl Guides Fall Fest at the University of Calgary. This large-scale event brought together approximately 400 Girl Guides for a day of hands-on STEM exploration! Throughout the day, the girls rotated through several interactive experiments, engaging in activities such as creating DIY lava lamps, building bridges, crafting thermometers, and making their own slime. It was a fun and educational experience aimed at sparking curiosity and excitement about science and engineering.

NOVEMBER 2024 - Welcome our amazing volunteers with an exciting day filled with fun activities! Attendees will enjoy games, prizes, and a photo booth to capture memorable moments. An informative session will provide key details, while delicious food will keep everyone energized throughout the event.

WISE x TOASTMASTERS: POWER UP YOUR PUBLIC SPEAKING

NOVEMBER 2024 - WISE and Toastmasters team up to boost your confidence and enhance your speaking skills through engaging activities! This workshop will taught attendees effective techniques for both planned and impromptu speaking in a supportive environment. It's perfect for anyone looking to elevate their communication abilities.

KIDS IN STEM

NOVEMBER 2025 - WISE brought STEM to life at Signal Hill Library (November 9, 2024) with a Bridge Challenge, where kids designed and built their own bridges, and at Central Library (November 23, 2024) with a Cabbage pH Indicator experiment, exploring how natural substances reveal acidity. We can’t wait to continue inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.

MEDICAL SCHOOL NIGHT

NOVEMBER 2024 - Students from various healthcare programs across Canada, including pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, optometry, and veterinary medicine, contribute to this event. Students interested in these programs have the opportunity to have all their questions about applications, programs, and a "day in the life" answered.

NOVEMBER 2024 - Relaxing event to connect with the WISE community over a Gilmore Girls marathon and warm grilled cheese sandwiches! Great opportunity to take a break from the studying and relax with the girlies!

STUDY NIGHT

JANUARY 2025 - A focused and productive evening that brought together students for a dedicated study session. Attendees prepped for midterms, caught up on assignments, and connected with fellow women in science in a supportive environment. Using the Pomodoro Technique, participants balanced deep study sessions with fun, refreshing breaks. Snacks were provided throughout the night to keep everyone energized and motivated.

GIRL GUIDES BRIDGE BUILDING CHALLENGE

JANUARY 2025 - WISE kicked off the year with an exciting Bridge Building Challenge at a Girl Guides location on January 28, 2025! Participants put their engineering skills to the test, designing and constructing their own bridges while learning about structural stability and problem-solving. It was inspiring to see the creativity and teamwork that went into each design.

A big thank you to the Girl Guides for their enthusiasm and to our volunteers for making this hands-on STEM experience possible.

NETWORKING NIGHT

JANUARY 2025 - A career fair-style event that brought together students and industry professionals. Attendees had the chance to meet representatives from leading companies like CNRL, PepsiCo, ATCO, and many more, learning about internships, co-op placements, and recent graduate positions. The event provided an excellent platform for students to ask questions, build their networks, and gain valuable insights into various industries.

WISE x WHITEFOX TECHNOLOGIES: FINDING YOUR VOICE IN STEM

JANUARY 2025 - WISE and Whitefox Technologies came together to help women find their voice in STEM. This event was filled with inspiring stories, heartfelt advice, and empowering discussions on navigating challenges and seizing opportunities!

GIRL GUIDES STEM OLYMPICS

FEBRUARY 2025 - WISE hosted the STEM Olympics, a special event led by our Junior Outreach Coordinator. Girl Guides rotated through a variety of interactive STEM stations, including trivia, Pictionary, bridge building, speed math, and tower design. Every participant took home a prize, making the day even more rewarding!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this fun-filled session. We loved seeing the excitement and problem-solving skills on display, and we can’t wait for more STEM adventures in the future!

WISE x PEPSICO: BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

FEBRUARY 2025 - WISE and PepsiCo teamed up for an incredible workshop on personal branding! Through insightful discussions and activities, we explored how we perceive ourselves and the impressions we leave on others. It was an inspiring session that helped us refine our personal brands and build confidence in showcasing our skills.

MOCKTAILS AND MASTERPIECES

FEBRUARY 2025 - A relaxing and creative evening that brought together students for a Valentine’s-themed crafting experience. In collaboration with the Origami Club and the STEM Art Hub, attendees had the chance to unwind, get artistic, and create heartfelt gifts while enjoying delicious mocktails. From intricate origami to beautiful handmade pieces, creativity was in full swing as participants let their imaginations run wild. The event provided a perfect space to relax, socialize, and embrace artistic expression in a fun and welcoming atmosphere.

WISE STICKER SALE

MARCH 2025 - The WISE executive team came together to design and create a collection of unique stickers, which we were thrilled to share with our community at the WISE Sticker Sale. From creative concepts to final designs, each sticker reflected the passion and talent within our team. Students stopped by throughout the day to browse, purchase their favorites, and support WISE initiatives.

TRIVIA & TUNES

MARCH 2025 - A night of friendly competition, music, and excitement brought together students for the ultimate trivia and karaoke showdown. Hosted by WISE, WiCS, and Robogals, attendees battled it out in a high-energy Kahoot challenge while taking karaoke breaks to showcase their vocal talents. With exciting prizes on the line—including gift cards, experience passes, and surprises—teams brought their A-game, making for a thrilling and unforgettable evening. Beyond the fun, the event also supported a great cause, with all proceeds from food sales and "Toonie for a Tune" karaoke going towards the Women’s Centre of Calgary and the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association.

SALSA & SALSA NIGHT

MARCH 2025 - An evening of movement, music, and community, Salsa & Salsa Night brought students together to step out of their comfort zones and onto the dance floor. Hosted by WISE and UDC, the event welcomed dancers of all levels to learn salsa moves, connect with others, and embrace the rhythm in a lively and energetic atmosphere.

Between dance sessions, attendees enjoyed chips and salsa, adding the perfect touch to a night filled with great music and even better company.

WISE x PASS STUDY SESSION

MARCH 2025 - A productive and collaborative evening, the WISE x PASS Study Session brought students together to review key CHEM 203 concepts and prepare for upcoming assessments. Led by PASS Leaders, the session provided a space for attendees to ask questions, tackle challenging topics, and reinforce their understanding in a supportive environment.

With snacks available to keep everyone energized, students worked through material together, gaining confidence and clarity ahead of their exams.

EARTH SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY EXHIBITION (ESfS)

MARCH 2025 - WISE was thrilled to be an exhibitor at the 12th ESfS Exhibition, held from March 16–18. ESfS is a dynamic geoscience outreach event where students, families, and the public have the opportunity to explore Earth science through interactive exhibits.

At our booth, we showcased the fascinating world of non-Newtonian fluids with a hands-on activity featuring a kiddie pool filled with cornstarch and water (oobleck). WISE executives and volunteers worked together to engage with visitors, guiding them through experiments and explaining the science behind the fluid’s changing viscosity under pressure.

LUNCH AND LEARN

MARCH 2025 - WISE had the opportunity to connect with high school students at Saint Francis High School, sharing insights into the exciting opportunities in STEM and university life. Through engaging discussions, we highlighted the diverse science and engineering disciplines students can pursue, inspiring them to explore their passions and future careers.

WISE x GARMIN: TECHNICAL SKILLS & YOU 

MARCH 2025 - A hands-on and insightful evening, WISE x Garmin brought students together to explore the importance of professional technical skills and how to effectively showcase them on a resume. Garmin representatives provided tailored advice, helping attendees understand which skills matter most for their majors and career aspirations.

Through interactive discussions and real-world insights, students gained a deeper understanding of how to stand out in the job market. The session equipped them with practical tools to refine their technical expertise and confidently take the next steps in their careers.

WOMEN IN SPACE

MARCH 2025 - An inspiring and empowering night, Women in Space Night welcomed students from all backgrounds to explore the future of diversity in aerospace. In collaboration with SOAR, Calgary to Space (CTS), and the Schulich Space Rover Team (SSRT), the event featured a panel of industry experts, top academics, and female leaders, who shared their experiences navigating the space sector.

Attendees engaged in thought-provoking discussions on career paths in aerospace, followed by networking and snacks, where they connected with peers and professionals alike. The evening fostered a sense of community and excitement, proving that the future of space is diverse, ambitious, and limitless.
